Medical Director

Job Description 


We are looking to appoint an experienced and strong Medical Director to join the Board of Directors of an independently owned Yorkshire-based secure mental health hospital (100+ beds) and a small new residential service. The organisation is currently rated as Good having addressed many, but not yet all, historic shortcomings. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Medical Director seeking a fresh or perhaps a less constrained role who wishes to have a substantial influence on the quality and future development of this small group. As the Medical Director, you will be one of 4 in the Executive Leadership Team. The medical team has been extremely stable, is collegiate in nature, well-regarded and fully staffed. We’ve not used a Locum doctor for many years. Due to impending retirement, we need a Medical Director who will continue to be fully invested in maintaining and driving the standards that we have worked so hard to achieve.

During the last year, we have opened new regional services for Women patients and for patients with Autism as we closed our LD services, respite the challenges posed by Covid-19.

You will be joining an experienced team that has been formed over the last couple of years. In particular, you will drive the medical performance, manage the medical team of 9 doctors to deliver this and lead on several of the governance committees.


You must already be a successful and experienced leader with a passion for quality and people. You will need to demonstrate considerable experience in senior medical management and be able to develop and deliver continuous improvement in all medical areas.

Key requirements of the role;

  • An existing Medical   Director, either within a Trust or an Independent. It would be desirable to have NHS managerial experience. Might suit someone at or approaching retirement with years of expertise leading teams and standards.

  • MRC Psych or equivalent with section 12(2) and AC approval and ideally with CCT or equivalent accreditation.

  • Be on the GMC specialist register and be recognised as an expert in your field.

  • Experience as a Responsible Officer.

  • Proven ability to lead a  team of professionals.

  • Be values-driven.

  • Own and take pride in your clinical leadership and standards.
